His suffering stops mattering the moment he uses it as an excuse to destroy someone else's life. Kill her dad or whatever. It's deserved. But torturing her because of an inferiority complex that comes from twisted love and self misery isn't particularly inciting to the readers. We can feel bad for him, but on the overall, many things could have been avoided were he to be true to himself and not a dick.

his suffering is not worthless, but knowing his past means knowing his behavior. we tend to sympathize with them easily if their action were explained (specially if we love them), that doesn't mean it's justifiable behavior to bring someone down because you didn't experience the same misfortunes. for example: you suddenly know your bully has also been bullied before, we can rationalize that and came to understand "why did he do it".
