    It's a popular concept in Asian hospitals, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. They have a staple gold earring with colored jewel center for the baby (you can choose the colors for the jewel) that they'll add on your hospital bill.

    Source: I'm an Asian baby who got their ears pierced at the hospital and my earrings have red jewel on it.
