well he only believed that what he was doing was the right thing, to 'worship' him like that because that was what he was taught by mc. he never noticed him being scared at first cuz he thought the reaction of mc was how worship normally goes, but now that he's seen mc genuinely freak out and have the same fearful look as he did when he saw the ex as he was about to choke him
