He is literally mentally damaged due to all his partners treating him like a disposable, replacable boytoy. He does NOT 'have to put in effort', he needs to learn that what happened to him in the past is NOT the norm in life. Hence why it takes time and effort on the other side actually to make him see that. Mental trauma is NOT only one person's problem in a relationship and needs to be solved by both of them, together.
This has nothing to do with 'being a man' either, that's a VERY toxic thing to say towards a person that has always been abandoned by others and thinks it's normal.
