I really like how realistic this story is...I live in a small town myself and when my father came out, that he wants to be a woman it didn't take long and all the people knew it and almost all of them turned the back towards him...his father (so my grandfather) even told him: you are not my son anymore, for me you are death. That hurt my father so much that he was/is depressive...its better now than four years ago. Now he/she lives with a girlfriend together (witch was a man before too)and has a lot of people around, witch aren't bothered about it but respect the choice my father made to come out.
