The ML is possessive and you can say he is calculating and manipulative but the MC seems to be aware of it. I'd say its a very plot focused adventure action story with the right amount of romance (it is fade to black sex scenes if it matters to you).
But personally I really enjoyed it, I don't think the ML was that bad. Plus he is very apparent in trying to manipulate the situations to benefit him, but sometimes ends up ruining his own plans because of his feelings for the MC.
