It *is* weird as fuck, from a narrative standpoint, that humans are keeping human-adjecent beings as pets; I think from the first chapters you can already notice that they are part humans even to the humans' eyes (and iirc there is an author's note saying humans "live peacefully with 'four-eared creatures'"), but alas, it's weird either way. I totally get your comment and idk how people misinterpreted that reading comprehension is truly dead
Regardless tho, I think this is just one of those stories meant to be read with a "dead brain", or something of the sort; it's not really trying to paint itself as a story with neat world-building or, in general, something trying to give much weight to the humans in general. The animals get sorted into pet/stray for story driving purposes, and humans end up solely as plot devices. So, yes– weird af if you think about it for more than 3 seconds, but also not something the author probably meant to be read with that "high" of a thought process lol
