Remember they part ways after Cal found out Johnny’s mom was dead and that he lied about it. Cal was pissed and reset on delivering Johnny until he got kidnapped by the gang. So logically Johnny should have taken this opportunity to run the moment Cal wasn’t around. But instead he rescued him and stick with him. Which only imply he goes it because he loves him. And Johnny should be expecting Cal to at least find it suspicious and mention it. But he doesn’t. He acts like nothing is wrong. Because he already figured it out and just play blind. So of course Johnny snapped.
It is a “not saying I love you” type of story. It shows through their behaviour that they care but will never say it out loud.
