Because Korean, like Japanese, can drop the subject of the sentence if it is mentioned and the discussion continues around the same subject. You could go through an entire paragraph without having to put a pronoun in. So when Alec first showed up, the translations went all over the place with her gender until Muriel/Murieli/(whatever spelling) also started to show up and confirmed the she pronoun with a quick flash forward to their future adulthood.
