I think that MC making different choices changed the course of the novel, so the mother in law is no longer the evil antagonist.

Even the mc is getting weirded out.

Even so, isn't the change was too sudden? I think the author actually want to make the mother in law character as a strict and wise woman who want the best in the family. But the way they introduce the character to us doesn't look that way. Because, as you can see she really want her grandchild to be in the best surroundings and be happy.
