I think that John may have some extraordinary powers and something must've happened because that's why he doesn't use his powers or want his level to checked.
But he may also not have any powers and regardless of that fact, he's already a hero without them.
I think there's a possibility John is actually super strong and his dad wrote the book for him to remind him to always help those weaker than him. His comments about how the others are weak and useless and his convo with Arlo also hints toward this. And maybe his dad is protective about him because he's exceptional, and maybe something bad happened to him because of his power (something to do with the green haired girl). It would be ironic if everyone else were the cripples and John was the hero. But that's just one of many possibilities. I can't wait for more.
