To be fair, I think he's trying to make sure that his son is mature enough for the relationship and is actually serious. Since when he was scolding him, it wasn't about being gay, but about about how growing up Maya's had difficult tastes with the people he's shown interest in and got his feelings hurt. He may have just wanted to make sure that Maya was serious and not just dating someone with the poor judgement of action he's shown in the past.
