Since Kiran turned him into a vampire (I think they're vampires), I guess he didn't know how to explain that to his father, and of course, to Wha-Ran too, so he disappeared from their sight, but it's still around watching for them :)

I'd think never showing up at all would be worse. At least he told him he was alive. That gives some hope he'll be able to visit when he's better.
