dont remember much from the novel but im pretty sure that penny is cursed, thats why in real world and the book one she was/is hated by her family. Not denying that Derrick is an asshole coz Raynold got way better (especially later on) but it is kinda what it is.
Tbh...From what I remember Derrick wasn't that good of a guy even when he wasnt controlled bro was No.1 on my hit list
