At this point, it seems to me like a mixture of hunger for power and homophobia. He has cultivated the crown prince and his friendship with him in the hope of perhaps one day finding himself at the side of the new emperor. When he now realizes that the prince is in a homosexual relationship and that this may stand in the way of his ascension to the throne, he turns his back on the prince immediately. This was probably never true friendship, but only self-interest. At least that is my interpretation.
Did this dude REALLY betray his lifelong best friend just because he saw him kissing another man?!
