Hi!
Well I read the novel not to long ago and to be honest for me at least the emperador never redime himself. To give you and example (it would have spoilers):
Spoiler alert:
The emperator gifted dorothea with presents and even celebrate a birthday party for her (even though it’s the same say the empress died, and he has never hold a party for dorothea before). But he still considere her more like a royal who has to accomplish her duties instead of a daughter. Following the example, the emperator started involving her in her royal duties at the parlament and such and refused her relationship with Ethan. Even paying Ethan an amount of money to leave Dorothea (so personally I still can’t stand Dorothy’s father).

I understand why he is such an incompetent father, it seems there is no one to hit the emperor in the back and tell him he's doing a sh*t job as a father... Also some people actually get ptsd from something like the birth of a child ou the death of a loved one because of how things happened so when he lost his wife, to be able to deal with it, he focused his mind on how make their family properous again. But still, even if that didn't happen, he would still be a crapy father
Novel readers can you spoil me?
I'm kinda on team dad and cheering for him to have a redemption arc but will that happen?
