one thing that bugs me is the way the author draws Akira, I mean technically she is a girl thats mistaken as a guy but her design completely makes her look nothing but a guy :/

I agree. I was just about to post the same thing. I'm really trying hard here to see her as a girl but at best all I can see in my eyes is BL. I imagined them kissing...but BL. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ Unless there's a dramatic transformation which would then make it kinda cheap then she's totes a dude in my eyes.( ̄∇ ̄")

I know right?! Honestly if there was no context, I would have assumed I was looking at a guy the whole time ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍

She looks like a guy, because that's the point. It wouldn't make sense if she looked girly or androgynous and always got mistaken for a guy.
For me, just because she looks like a guy doesn't mean I see her as a guy. She identifies as a girl, so I see her as a girl, regardless of what she looks like. Not having the problems the rest of you are.

i have girl friends n senpai that looks really like male. not only one but three, even its weird to see them using girl clothes(they're so flat and tall). i guess maybe bcs their hormones that give them that kind of looks

I agree that she looks like a guy, but as others have pointed out that's the point. She's a girl that because of her looks is mistaken as a guy, and she dresses in a way to match her looks, being more boy-ish than girly. I love her character design for two reasons, 1.) I love characters that look androgynous or different from their gender so it's refreshing for a girl described as "boyish" or tomboy to look like a boy
2.) I relate to how she is comfortable wearing pants/shirts from men's clothing stores and being mistaken as a boy, while clearly identifying as female. I don't look like a boy but I am very comfortable being more masculine than feminine, yet I don't identify as male. I feel very feminine norms like big boobs, dresses, and makeup are things I could live without and still feel as feminine.
Sorry for ranting, but I really love her character and wanted to show my support for her design.

I have to disagree that she looks androgynous or "boyish". She looks completely and utterly like a boy which is what I'm saying. I read gender benders all the time and enjoy a good boyish female. I also agree that you dont have to have big boobs and etc to be feminine. I never said otherwise. Never said that I want her character to wear feminine things either. I even said I felt that would be cheap of the author if they did that. What I am saying is that nothing in her design would ever make me believe she was female if this wasn't translated to english. I'm not even saying thats a bad thing since I like her character. Just stating how I feel.

heyy all I completely understand all your points, I wasn't trying to dismiss her character that she identified as female despite her appearance. Like a couple of you pointed out that "it's the point" to the character design. It's not particularly the way she dresses, but I guess I feel that there could be a better artistic distinction to flesh out the way a character can look (not particularly the core physical aspect like chest, clothes, makeup, but maybe distinctive details?) ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭

Yeah, I see your point that if this manga wasn't translated and just going by the panels this would look like a BL since she looks like a boy.
