must be because the chapter was short and suspend it on a dependent part of the novel. I've read the chapter in the novel and it was sickening and twisted for Alexis to that. And if you think Eugene is not clever enough you'll come to love him in this part of the novel because he left no stone unturned.
That whole interaction was forced, unnatural and only there for a dramaticcliff hanger and to make the plot do what the author wants.... like his reaction was so flat it doesn't really have emotional impact to me /shrug
