Why is the author trying to manipulate mc into thinking he did something wrong, reasonably it is weird for someone to steal an item and even sniff it, I can understand if it was just a misunderstanding like if he found it and happened to want to like the smell but other than that I really don't know if the mc did anything wrong
I agree, if the scenario of finding his clothes ends with MC not getting violent at all or putting his hands on the guy, it was a pretty tame reaction. That is so weird, and would make anyone think they need to keep away
he wasn’t saying he was wrong it that he only feels bad because his friends bullied and beat him up BECAUSE they caught him with the clothes. He only feels bad because he did nothing, sure i do think it’s weird but does it warrant to be bullied and abused the whole school year after?

also to add i do feel like before he apologized he should have addressed him sniffing his clothes bc he is a victim tbh but i’m talking about more after the fact, but idk it might just be my easy going mindset speaking
