You literally said in a fight you ALSO attack. That means in a fight you ALSO dodge and parry. But he didn't have a shield so for the current "fight" he's using the dodging tactic. Evade the opponent UNTIL you have the ability/moment/opening to attack.
The ONLY time when you can say he's NOT fighting is when he has ran away or hid himself somewhere. If he's in the fray he's fighting. Not only that he's GOING towards the boss not AWAY from it. So idk where you get the idea he's not fighting from. He's not attacking. Sure. But he's doing maneuvers to avoid taking damage.
