
The headphones and coffee thing is an analogy slash foreshadowing of what's going to happen in regards to the ML rival showing up.
The headphones represent ML and FLs relationship, but also mostly they represent the ML. Rival shows up, and breaks the headphones, then offers to throw them out, then throws out his coffee, which gets spilled on top of the headphones, essentially covering them/making a mess. In this analogy, Rival is the coffee, and if the ML or the relationship is the pair of headphones, then I guess the rest is pretty self explanatory.

The analogy is pretty well done but I can totally understand how someone who isn't tuned in to this type of "read between the lines" that most artists do in some way, could perceive the Rival as a bit of a creep.
