I live on ao3. So basically, the site is mostly tags filtered. If you’re trying to look for a specific ship then in the search bar type “person A/PersonB” you can also leave it blank and click search then go to filters and in there you can find gender pairing prefs, fandom prefs or tag prefs.
Say you want smut then type “smut” in as a tag in the tag filters.
On the side there’s also a filter in which you can filter out things/ ships you don’t want to see. If you’re looking for a specific title then you can also type it in into the search bar
You need to create an acc, not required but highly necessary. Just look up your fandom/ship tag on google like ship name ao3 it will direct you to the fandom tag. You can also search ship name on site it will show some results and you click on the ship tags from any fic. From the tags you fliter by clicking on filter (on top of the results). You can bascially exclude/include any tag ships etc. (Really helpful). Also you can sort the fic so they can appear in order of latest update/ highest hits/highest kudos(similar to like etc.
Oh also I created an acc ages ago back then it was sorts invite only(?) Like I had to gst on their list by adding my email onto it and in like 2-3 days later they send me a mail saying now I can create an acc. Other than this the site is pretty easy and intuitive to use if all you wanna do is read fic. Dont know too much about uploading fics though

Tbh as someone that's been on ao3 for 10 years I don't even navigate the site as a whole. I just Google the ship I want and then use the tags to get more specific. I have never used the actual search function on ao3

you can read without acc I guess but create account cause you can bookmark and see your history later. I promise you it's important.
search whatever you want on the search bar and filter it with what you want likeyou can toggle language, trope (gl/bl) etc
I think cause the waitlist but like it used to be like 2 or 1 day for me but that's from idk from years years ago.
I just search for the tag of the pairing I like and sort by kudos.
