I was thinking the same thinggg maybe it connects to him not drinking or smoking etc
I think he doesn't like drinking or anything that puts him tipsy/not completely there because he feels like he always has to be hyper aware/alert of his surroundings so he can protect people around him, kinda like how he always checks the boulder.
