I get that the assault might seem unnecessary, but it’s important for the story. It shows who is behind it, explains the characters’ motives, and how it affects Brett and the others. It also helps move the story forward and shows Brett's inner struggles.

Its the dead guys dad. He found out Brett gonna testify on behalf of the shooter and trying to scare him so he backs out. If shooter doesn't have witnesses on his side he gonna lose and get a harsher sentencing, possibly even death penalty. They raped him and filmed or took pics but Brett stubborn and he not going down. We also don't know the full extent of what happened cuz the author chose not to show it but we see bits and pieces.
It also shows Brett on their date reflecting on his relationship with Hayden and how different it was being raped with 0 control vs having a safe word/way out. Since season 2 almost over(1 chapter left) we gonna have to wait to see what happens. ╥﹏╥

He was fully raped. It’s not noticeable at first until someone pointed out the hints the author left in some panels. When Brett stands up after the assaulters leave, you can see in one panel that his pants are scrunched up at the bottom of his legs. Indicating his pants were pulled down. There’s also pubic hair on his face as well.
