You are só right, the author wrote it in such a way that he sounds more like a dumb idiot or a sociopath who doesn't understand feelings, than a bad person.
But you can't deny that Dan's life got better after working for Jaekyung. No more loan sharks after his back and his grandmother in a good environment.
Jaekyung isn't even half bad as Caeser or Zhenya

Y'all be fr. Jaekyung IS an asshole, but he's not THAT bad of a person. I mean, if he really was a bad person, he wouldn't care to even be good to Granny. Probably, he has trouble expressing his emotions.
And whether or not Jaekyung is in the picture, Kim Dan would still be at an all time low because he wouldn't be able to pay for Granny's hospital bills and the debt collectors would have their way with him, and he'd still be working to the bone.
Also, Kim Dan has never not given his consent so I think it's a stretch to associate Jaekyung with literal rapists. He may be an asshole, but he's not THAT bad
