A suppository is just the term for any type of medication that is inserted in the anus, just like any non-liquid medicine that is swallowed is called a pill. This method is just as effective (and in some cases more effective) than swallowing medication. The lining of the intestinal tract breaks down the inserted medication and it is absorbed by the body and distributed. Suppositories are most often given to younger children who cannot swallow pills.
