It's... bittersweet, the feelings i have for this. When the remake came out lots of teens started getting into it and glorifying Akito, brushing over every horrible thing they did just because they're also a victim, and that honest to god was disgusting to me.So I'm sorry for the long rant hahaha.
But it's a good anime so I'd tell you to read/watch it, but like....bear in mind Akito will not be held accountable for anything they do, no matter what. "Forgive and forget" all the way

Like, its one thing to understand the character did what they did because of trauma and that they were also victim in a horrible situation. I understand all of that. But its another thing ENTIRELY to not face the consequences of your actions when you're already of age. Thats not how it works. A truckdriver dont get excused for running over someone because they lost their mother that day. A person dont get excused for hitting someone if the face because they weren't in their right mind at the time.

I understand your frustration completely because this is what I felt when they completely whitewashed Gakuho Asano's image and justified what he did to class E and his own students (which turns out he did because one of the his first 3 students died of bullying and now he wanna make everyone tough smh). I had to pause the anime and take a deep breath so that I don't go mad because of what they did. he was completely thrashing his own students in the name of competition and one sob story changed fucking everything, but that couldn't ever justify what brutality he inflicted upon the students that trusted him. Manga writers do be doing shit like this in their stories sometimes. But I'll take your suggestion and prepare myself for the disappointment ahead. :)
I feel like im having a stroke whenever I see people gushing over Akito. Honest to god.
Dont get me wrong, Fruits Basket was one of my first animes ever. I watched it as the first version was released ages ago unfinished, and watched it again after the remake. Needless to say, it was really dear to me at the time. Unfortunately, the ending and the way the authors dealed with Akito absolutely ruined it for me.
Some of us spent YEARS growing attached to those characters. YEARS watching them getting tortured, traumatized and physically abused over, and over, and over again by that nuttjob, and y'all brats have the goddamn nerve to say "we missed the point of the show" when we find it completely unnaceptable that Akito didn't end up in jail or in a psychiatric facility, AT THE VERY FUCKING LEAST. Let me remind you. Akito was 21-24 years old in that show. Tohru and all those kids were 16-18 or LESS. She was an unhinged adult that had NO business whatsoever anywhere near those kids, and shame on all the other adults from that fucked up sohma family who just stood by doing NOTHING to stop it (yeah im also looking at you shigure, you fucking pedohile psycho) they can take their fucking curse and SHOVE IT. YOU SHOULD ALL GET ARRESTED.
And im sorry, but what the HELL do y'all think would have happened if Tohru didnt show up? Care to explain that to me? Cause im seeing someone ending up dead. Yes, romance is wholesome and I love Tohru with all my heart but STOP romanticizing her role in all of this. Tohru is NOT a goddamn solution, she's a victim, just like all those kids tangled up in this mess.
I dont remember everything, but I do remember Akito almost killing the horse girl by pushing her off the fucking balcony, blinding the doctor by stabbing him in the eye, verbally and physically abusing the mouse guy and just generaly TRAUMATIZING every single kid in that godforsaken show, and then guess what? "Oh im sorry guys, i have issues and dealing with trauma. Can you forgive me? Great! Lemme go back to my happy ending together with my pedophile groomer of a boyfriend aka Shigure "
.....
Are you BLOODY SERIOUS??? Since WHEN trauma gives anyone free pass to torture others??? Like it or not Akito is a CRIMINAL, hello???My GOD I got to a panel by the end of the manga where the family was all reunited in a wholesome moment and the horse girl was made out to look like the "bad" person for not forgiving Akito. That scene made me see red.
A "lesson in forgiveness and healing" MY LEFT TESTICLE. This type of romanticing real life situations, with real life consequences, is EXACTLY the type of behavior that helps abusers get away unpunished for their crimes.
