Smut means the plot has multiple sex scenes or that's the whole plot. Yaoi can still have sex, but it isn't the main idea.

No problem! This is just my understanding so I can't say it's 100 % correct.
Yaoi means sexual content typically, shounen ai is used when it's boy x boy but not sexual. Smut is when it's purely sexual and little plot.
Or that's how it used to be at least.

But there’s a difference between Yaoi and Yaoi Smut, right? Cause I had no expectations of there to be sex in this and everyone is making it sound surprising that the characters are young cause they thought there was going to be 18+ content?
