Before the official chapter started, the author had a one shot story about them that had the bl theme, maybe you'll find that in other sites.
But even here, our mc does like hikaru and maybe not in a sense of human but the thing that's taken over hikarus body also likes our mc. It's probably not meant to be a romance story but ig since it's between two guys it's still a bl.
It's not a typical BL, but the queerness is def there. The main focus is on horror and psychological.
At the beginning the bl aspect was more prominent but as the manga progressed it became more horror focused, its probably gonna come back but its in the bg for now. In origin this story is bl tho
The author has stated quite clearly that this is NOT a BL because their is no romance in this story, so no L. She also wrote that "Hikaru" is neither capable of feeling love nor sexual desire,. And the MC views "Hikaru" as childlike since that's how the entity behaves. Even "Hikaru" says it doesn't need to eat, sleep, or have sex because it isn't human. It just likes to put things, like other beings, inside it's body cavity to make it feel warm.
I mean the bl aspect is more prominent at the start because both characters used to have a crush on each other at the beginning. There was romance, even if hinted. Im using bl as an umbrella for a general relationship between them not in the sense of having sex etcc. This still has queer undertones, idk why some ppl wanna censor it
The author, while stipulating that he doesn't plan to focus on romance and therefore won't be traditional BL, did state that it remains queer, meaning Yoshiki is still in love with Hikaru, and the creature loves Yoshiki, but in a more dreamlike and supernatural way, being an entity from another plane.
The author explained that the genre of a work also defines the scope and the magazine in which it will be published in Japan, which is why he changed the main genre from BL to just horror. But as they say, it won't be censored either way. We won't see sex, but the romance between boys is still there. It's the basis of the story, but they won't necessarily end up on a nice note or be able to kiss. It's more of what was previously called shonen ai.
It's not "censorship" if the author themselves state there is no romance between the characters. Yoshiki is gay, but it's never established that he had feelings for Hikaru. And when "Hikaru" tells Yoshiki the real Hikaru's last thoughts, there's nothing to indicate he had feelings for Yoshiki. He wished for everyone's safety. And, as I said before, the author has made it VERY CLEAR that "Hikaru" is not capable of feeling romantically or sexually attracted to anyone. I don't think they could make it any clearer, especially when they stated this is not a BL story.
A character can be queer without being in love with his best friend. It's really weird to see a romantic relationship where there isn't one just because a character is gay. Especially since it explores other aspects of queerness, like Yoshiki worrying about having to marry and take over the family business. "Hikaru" is a Lovecraftian entity whose entire existence and way of feeling is completely different from humans. It only says "I love you" in the beginning because it's confused about experiencing Hikaru's feelings, plus that "love" did not appear to be romantic love at all.
the author toned it down real hard, maybe even got rid of it completely for censorship reasons, otherwise anime wouldn't be aired/ manga published. author can say whatever now, there was a switch up and all initial popularity was because of bl aspect, even now people are reading to see if anything of more happens, disregarding the inconsisted plot and stuff

Maybe you didnt read it from the beginning or maybe you cant pick up on the subtext but yoshiki definitely had a crush on hikaru and its hinted that before he died hikaru did too.
Like i said. The origin of the story remains bl, whether the author changed their mind or not. This doesnt mean that the story needs to be confined to just a certain kind of audience or content. A story can be bl and still be super intricate and nuanced. Like i said i used the term bl as an umbrella but i mean that this is a story with clear queer undertones and that souldnt be erased.
