He says "let me make you happy" now but it fails a basic empathy check. He's not trying to see the situation from her perspective. He doesn't care about how she feels or what she wants.
He feels regret and he doesn't want to lose the person he now realizes could have given him a happy marriage. He is not thinking about what is in her best interest.
Given the fact that she believes she is dying at this point she has wasted years of her life trying to make this marriage work, and should not be expected to spend what's left of her life trying to "fix" a relationship now that he's finally interested in giving a fxck.
