Yeah, the gap is too big for me and he literally just went through puberty. Growth spurt and all that. If he was studying for college and was like 17 - fine. Also, if the guy helping him was in highschool and was still a minor himself - also fine. This... Nah...
I think it would've made more sense if he was studying to get into college not high school that would have made the story a bit more susceptible to me personally. He also could be 16 because maybe his birthday is early in the year but still he's a minor nonetheless.
