(forgive me if this explaination sucks bc i randomly reread/skimmed the last few chaps and it's been years since I've read the entire story) I think he means "back to square one" bc his first/original way of trying to tie him down didn't work and caused the brunette to be traumatized and hate him, so he disappeared and manipulated brunette into pitying and talking to him again. Now that he opened up his own shop at the end, he was expecting brunette to show up (bc he manipulated him to essentially feel bad and (possibly?) forgive him). Once he did, he's essentially "back to square one" because he plans to claim/tie him down once again, probably using a different method. (I hope this makes sense, sorry if it doesn't :( )
I think it’s meant to show how victims go back to their abusers thinking it will be different but it will eventually be the same.
It literally means they're back to square one. ML can restart with MC in trying to win him over since ML managed to convince MC that he's being genuine in his apologies and redemption
