[The mc gets a few remarks that he's dumb, weak or pathetic because of the way he acts right now, but his past paints a different picture, he was far more sinister-like, highly intellectual and dangerous. It seems like right now it's repressed within him.
On the contrary he's also misunderstood by his past because the people from his past think of him as this sinister devilish being. They hold grudges against him expecting him to be the same sinister person that he once was, but he doesn't remember or care for his past self and he finds it annoying how those people judge him on what he used to be.
So it's kinda like he's underestimated and wrongly feared? Caught between misperception in the present and lingering fear and hatred from the past. I think it might fit what you're asking for.]
