Well, the story is hinting that our two cuties 'forced' their destiny to be each other, so they originally had other people as their destined partner but changed it (probably that being the reason for the blondie's misfortune as a side effect?) So the girl most probably is his original destined partner and I'm kinda worried cuz the bolder said "time is running out", so what if the red string goes to shit and undo itself? (⊙…⊙ )
