They are stupid. They want all the characters to be morally good all the time. Yes, the line of consent here is vague but this is a realistic depiction of how a person dealing with traumas can cause harm to their loved ones unintentionally.
i wasn't trying to justify his actions. what i'm saying is he is traumatized, he's even barely conscious enough to notice that he's self destructive behavior. this is what a traumatize person looks like and saying it's "unnecessary toxicity" feels absurd
