What was the author thinking while writing this?

A guy entering university fell "in love at first sight" with a 16 year old boy???? Why is the author romanticizing pedophilia?

No, he was literally 16, he thought he was AT MOST 16 cause the omega was a high schooler so he could be any age between 13 to 16. And he was 16 and the top was 20. At the present the omega has just turned 20 and the alpha is 24. Go back to read chapter 1, their ages are said there. This is clearly a pedophile if he liked a 16 year old high schooler being 20

Sorry to break it to you but thats not pedophilia. It is legally and morally questionable but not pedophilia. Abusing the term pedophilia for this scenario is just trivializing the gravity of REAL pedophilia. Pedophilia is a psychiatric disorder
where an adult has a sexual attraction to
    prepubescent children, typically under
    the age of 11. :)
On the other side an attraction to teenagers (generally 13-17) falls into a different category called hebephilia or ephebophilia.
