Actually succubus were known as women and incubus as men.
But some also say, they are the same and they can just change their appearances to match their partner or prefer one over the other.
And it doesn't change that both are said to live by absorbing energy through secual intercourse. Some literature even says, they absorb too much and kill their prey, but in most cases they ensnare and bewitch their prey. Some are so manipulated they get insane over it.
But it's all fiction and there are so many versions around the world now, that it's hard to say "this one is the right one"

The word incubus comes from the latin word incubare meaning to lay upon or lie down on top of. The word succubus is also Latin. Succubus comes from sucubare and suc comes from sub which means to lay under. The Latin doesn’t lie. Fiction has distorted the truth but etymology is the truth in its most bare form. Cubare means “to lie” as in to lay with. Fictional literature is about taking the truth and bending it in a way that it’s no longer the truth but also is just as plausible as the truth. That’s the point of it. You are welcome to fact check me. You’ll get the same answer by searching up the etymology.
He’s not an incubus if he’s bottoming! An incubus is a top not a male. A succubus is a bottom not a female. We really gotta get the masses educated on the differences.
