It isn't that they failed to read properly so much as they are reading something else into the story that is personal to themselves and their experience, and not something you would necessarily share. Similarly, a story which makes one kind of sense and meaning to you won't translate the same way to another person. It doesn't have to. Romance is written as a response to id, not superego. The id is irrational and has its own form of communication. Hence poetry. Hence art. Hence mythology and symbolism.
