Do you not own a cat because of allergies or is it a parental/housing issue? If it is allergies, there are breeds of cat that are hypoallergenic (they don't cause allergies). Sphinx is one, but there is another whose name I can't recall - it has a curly coat like a Poodle or a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Basically, allergies are caused by dander (dandruff) from the cat's fur. If the cat is not prone to shedding dander, you see no allergies. Also, if you groom your cat frequently, allergies can be greatly reduced.

If your "lack of feline love" is due to housing or parental reasons, be patient, work toward changing your circumstances and when you are able, find a place where you can share your life with the feline of your choice - I prefer adoption over purchasing because there are so many fur babies that need a loving home. Also, if you rent your home, a landlord can not deny a service animal - cats are common service animals for people with depression and PTSD.

I hope this has helped a little. I'm a vet tech and the mom to 9 cats. I couldn't live without them, so I understand your pain. Let me know if I can help again.

thanks for the advice! i was more complaining just for the sake of complaining, but your advice has made me seriously consider adopting a cat when i get my own place. my history with pets isn't the greatest though, so i'm a little apprehensive about getting one.

You're very welcome. Owning a pet takes a lot of patience. It's the little things that usually end up taking a toll on the owner. Then, when something big arises, it feels like being at the end of your rope. I guess that is why I see them as my children. I could never abandon my kids, so I could never abandon my pets. LOL That thinking has it's own problems though... I have had to bury too many of my "children". In the long run, I have always received way more than I have given, or it feels that way to me, at least. They're worth the trouble. ;)

Also if it's allergies, there is a medicine that you take in the form of weekly shots for a few years - mine was for about 2 years - that get rid of the allergy. I used to be allergic to cats dogs and anything, but now I have had 5 cats in my life with no reactions to them no matter how much they shed.
