The laws for self defense work like this pretty much everywhere. The ex already stopped his assault on Jaehyuk when Garam jumped at him. Meaning that he did not act in self defense.
In general, there is this wide spread misconception that the moment somebody physically assaults you in any way, you gain the right to assault them too because it counts as self defense but that's not true. You're only allowed to use violence to get out of and away from a physically harmful situation. If you have the opportunity to run/walk away but instead you decide to attack the attacker (which is what happend here) you didn't act in self defense, you just assaulted somebody.
