Your definition of "I've tried so hard" and her definition of it are two vastly different things. She has, people only dragged her down and constantly ridiculed her for her looks. You try being in her shoes and living with that mindset and see how you like it. Beauty is everything to a woman in time periods like this.
She isn't pathetic or unlikeable. Extreme, yes but can you blame her for acting this way? She had no support, no one to help her, her parents failed her. She is different from the usual heroines, but one that doesn't deserve this much insult.

I find it somewhat entertaining how the heroine is pathetic, dramatic and generally unlikable.

Still, that's more fresh than heroines with their biggest flaws being being too kind, too smart, too brave, too beautiful, and soooo not like other girls.
