I disagree, the story was leading up to it for quite a long time. It ended perfectly for the setup that was established
I think you missed my point entirely. There is no problem with the build up to this in the story. My issue is with the choice that the author makes to remove a character who is mature female and having vast destructive capability in favour for a younger, shinier version. U get???

Everything about this manga is brilliant & I have nothing against it. Only one thing bothers me a great deal:
The old female electricity mage was magnificient! This is one of those few manga where we had such a bad ass female allowed to mature with her age & still be relevant. But the author just had to kill her off & add a younger female mage just for optics. This was such a cheap ass shot. I don't think I will ever appreciate this development. I find the new blonde & younger female mage so unlikable. Should've never brought another cliché to thus manga like all other mangas!
