They are reading a manga that sexualizes minors but complain when people sexualize the already sexualized characters and when called out what they are reading they say they are minors themselves. Also.. i think age in characters depends. There are 100+ yrs old but looks like a child. Lolis for example. Most male mc in anime in shounen manga claims they highschool but looks like middle aged man. So it doesn't really make sense most of the time. The look matters
If they look like an adult and act like one then whatever arbitrary age placed by the author doesn't matter. If a character claims to be 18-500+ yrs old but acts looks a child, acts like a child and sounds like one. Then thats considered as a child, regardless of the age put by the author.
However, the reverse of this is different, there are a lot of anime characters who look adult yet are somehow 15-17.
