i hardly remember from the novels but they drink the resurrection medicine if im not mistaken
they came back to live. kyou was the last one who got revived but he lost his memory. he stayed with maomao at her apothecary shop.

it is. but he seems to enjoy his life with maomao from what i read. he even makes friends and still a cheerful young lad.
I mean yeah he'll enjoy life. Its just sad from a 3rd person's perspective. It's literally ignorance is bliss, but he lost memory of his mother and other people in the village, the other kids that loulan was not able to save etc. At the same time, he may never feel the pain of losing all of them.

It doesn't help that it was emphasized that he kept looking for his mom and how ecstatic he was from just seeing her for a couple of minutes. That's what has been ingrained in my brain about kyou.
