This bullshit is just self-serving nonsense. Saying you are doing something to help just to lessen your own guilt. He doesn't have the courage to stop his father so he helps after the fact so he can say he helped or he did all he could.
I think it was a calculated play to look good in front of the Duke, and possibly her later also. He doesn't know that no matter what excuse he'll try to conceive later won't work on her since she's already lived that life once before. So he'll have to eat his own B.S. (⌒▽⌒)
