i know right but i think its just these fantasies fujoshis have of gay men, they're not real portrayal of how gay people are in real life or how bisexual are in real life. in reality, most gay men prefer being the bottom than being top but these stories are how fujoshis imagine gay people

True, I have lots of gay friends and most of them are seke; they are bottom when the partner is straight and become top or bottom when the partner is also gay.

Lately I've been reading about why 'fujoshis' even exist, and why they like yaoi so much, and one of the reasons I've come across (and that makes sense to me) is that yaoi allows women to construct an identity as the sexual aggressor without having to worry about conventional gender roles. Because a LOT (probably most, actually) of fujoshis identify with the seme or at least consider the uke the prime target of their attraction, and a sexually aggressive woman is generally viewed very negatively in Japanese and Western cultures. And so it kind of makes sense to me that a lot of times in yaoi, a normally very heterosexual dude ends up bottoming. Because heterosexual fujoshis are ultimately attracted to STRAIGHT guys, not gay ones, and those are the people they want to dominate. Since they can't or won't be so aggressive IRL because of social pressures, they construct a fictional world where the object of attraction is the submissive partner, providing a sort of outlet for their desires.

I know this is getting long, but anyway, in like the 70s or 80s, yaoi was actually created (quite intentionally, I believe) to allow women to consume fiction that doesn't push gender roles onto them. And yeah, that's kind of exploitative of gay men, but luckily the genre has grown a lot and now has a lot of works that try to really be legitimate, representative LGBT fiction instead of just female domination fantasies. (See authors like Tagura Tohru and Yamamoto Kotestuko.)

Waah what a nice and informative comment!! It's refreshing to see. I agree with your reasoning about fujoshis and it is rather exploitative of gay men since they are often treated as a fetish in the genre (same can be said for gl). Fortunately, as you've said, there are a lot of works from recent years that try to be legit LGBT representation--which I've been on the look out for and what I enjoy reading the most.

So there's that deep interpretation for that, thank you for bringing this to light.

This, for me at least is the reason that i read yaoi. in general my family is very conservative, especially in regards to gender roles. admittedly, i am primarily attracted to ukes for some reason. like, even though the seme is hot, the uke is the one i would date lmaoo
