As a reincarnation cale knows a lot of the original story. So helping certain ppl survive and get stronger and also become loyal toward himself will ensure his own survival. He is not completely altruistic but he is like most ppl a little kind, a little sly, a little helpful, a little selfish, a little good, a little bad. Etc. It takes effort to be completely good, kind, selfless. Without expecting anything in return. Such as the Mother Theresa’s if the world.

"nothing is ever for his own benefit". Yeah when I read "it's not for her own benefit" I stopped and realise it was a mistranslation as it was more logical that the dragon was talking about Cale in this situation.
Don't worry, ENG isn't ma native langage and I realised that something was missing, so other people will realise it too, and the one who are lost will find your comment ;)
Both translations missed it this time, but there is one important message here that was missed in this chapter due to mistranslation.
Go back to when Cale talks with Eruhaben. Cale wanted Pendrick to treat Mary's chronic pain. So he is chatting with Eruhaben regarding that and Cale is asking Eruhaben's opinion on that. Eruhaben responds that Pendrick is not skilled enough. Then Csle skillfully pushes the task to Eruhaben and the dragon notices Cale's scheming, but is not angry about it. And the reason is mistranslated in both versions as "nothing is ever for my benefit".
What it should be is "nothing is ever for his own benefit" - the reason Eruhaben is okay with Cale giving him work and scamming him is because Cale NEVER does anything for his own benefit.
It's such an important part in this story that was missed!! This is the start when the readers start to doubt Cale's intentions and his own claims that he is selfish and not a good person. Everything Cale ever does claiming it's for him, is always for the benefit of the others!
