Exactly! When he took care of him for that short time, the kid brought a light into his life that he never experienced before. Not wanting to trap him there or make him feel obligated to stay with him though, he sent him to someone else that would take care of him and expected the child to forget about him.

Uhhh coz that's what you do when your with a traumatised child? You keep them company and make sure they feel safe. And one of the ways you can do that is to read to them and play with them... Don't tell me everyone who plays and reads to you at night is automatically a father or mother figure
Also if he was such a father figure why doesn't Alois remember him in the 1st place
Pls reread ch1 he never mentions the Duke helped him
and if you reread ch6 that's where he remembers that it was the Duke who saved him all those years ago

Id say he's more of his savior than a father figure. You have to remember that the very first chapter shows this kid getting beat with a bottle and then dragged by the hair about to die before a man (that he doesn't remember) saves his life. Afterwards, the duke took care of him for a short period of time since, yah know, he probably had severe trauma from the while experience. After he was mentally and physically sound, the duke found someone to take the kid to see the world, not wanting to make the kid feel like he was obligated to stay in his manor just because he helped him. He expected to be forgotten after that and thought that the kid would eventually find love and get married. Never once did he express feeling like a father figure to him nor did the young man feel like he was a father to him. Temporary caretaker doesn't automatically put someone into the position of parent-figure, especially from something like reading him stories and making flower crowns and sleeping in a bed with a child who not to long ago he found being best by the man who is supposed to be his father and so probably didn't feel safe sleeping alone.
i don’t know why everyone is all riled up. The story was actually beautiful ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
and just in case you didn’t notice he did not in fact raise him as father or groom him or even molest him. yes he took care of him for a while prolly looking for someone to care for Alois but as shown in ch 6, he sent him off while he was still a child to see the world or find himself expecting nothing in return then Alois came back when he was already an adult ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ the duke was still rejecting him when he was already 24
so what is the problem here? it’s not even like he waited for 18 and jumped his ass…
the author just showed the child care scenes to show that Alois showed him that there indeed wasn’t just darkness in the world and he was happy with that.
they saved each other ε=ε=(ノ≧∇≦)ノ
