So they embark on a saving quest “this topic is immoral” “they need to stop writing about this is illegal” I’m so tired of stuck up people reading BL. They’re ruining it for everybody.

I think you might’ve misunderstood my point, I wasn’t saying it’s ‘hard’ to separate fiction from reality. I was just acknowledging that some readers have strong personal reactions to certain topics, even in fiction, and that’s valid for them. Everyone engages with stories differently, and while I personally just skip scenes I don’t like, I get why others might critique how heavy themes are handled. At the end of the day, it’s fiction, but discussions about it can still be meaningful (or messy, lol).

I get where you’re coming from, but this feels like a false comparison. Just because someone criticizes a trope in fiction doesn’t mean they’re obligated to be an activist IRL to ‘earn’ the right to speak up. People can multitask, they can dislike how grape is portrayed and care about real-world issues. It’s not an either/or thing.

Also, the ‘illegal site’ argument is a weird deflection. Whether someone reads legally or not doesn’t suddenly make their criticism invalid. If the trope is harmful, it’s worth discussing, regardless of where it’s posted.

That said, yeah some people in comments go overboard with performative outrage instead of having actual discussions. But dismissing all criticism as pointless just shuts down conversation that could actually lead to better storytelling
