Marquis is pitiful, but he did deserve his ending in my opinion. In all the other timelines, where "Penelope" soul continuously gets dragged back to repeat the Penelope's life. It was always Marquis, who would at the end of Yvonne's 'endings' forcefully reverse time, as a result Penelope's soul was damaged after multiple reverse and final sent to modern world. "Penelope" death was expected in every Yvonne's ending.
I think there was also a timeline where Marquis was in love with Yvonne, even after he finds out she was Layla he choose love over responsibility, he helped her and caused Penelope's death yet again. Only to get guilty and betray Yvonne by reversing time again. He will remember everything by the end of all this if I remember correctly.
